Betula Papyrifera aka white birch is a short-lived species of birch native to North America. It is often called Paper birch due to its thin white bark, which often peels in paper like layers from the trunk. Many indigenous groups use birchbark for making various items, such as canoes, containers and wigwams. The sap is boiled down to produce birch syrup. Panels of bark can be fitted or sewn to make cartons and boxes. It can also be used as a backing for porcupine quillwork and moose hair embroidery. Even when completely submerged in water it can be used to start a fire.
